    1. West Virginia Wesleyan College's 'Global Awareness Infusing Networks of Service' (GAINS) project re-designed short-term travel abroad courses typically offered during May term to include a service component, with the goal of linking student exposure to global issues through travel, while incorporating focused problem investigation through applied service. The WVWC Bonner Coordinator and two Bonner Scholars traveled to Belize on one of the first GAINS trips. The course was designed to immerse students in hands on investigations of Belize's diverse tropical ecosystems and the human cultures they support. The presenters will describe their experiences working with BFREE (Belize Foundation for Research and Environmental Education), and their work with educating themselves and Belizean children about life in the jungle.
  3. Resources and Opportunities: Growing a Campus Wide Community Engagement Program - LeeAnn Brown, Evey Hepinger, Brooke Rawson

From a staff of one to a team comprised of a Dean, Bonner Director and Bonner Coordinator, and three VISTAs, the WVWC Center has become a resources to students, faculty and community partners. During the session, you will learn how WVWC maximized on a new administration, dedicated faculty and staff, long time community partners, Bonner Foundation support and new VISTA opportunities to lay the foundation for the current program. Key components of the three year CE endeavor included strategic planning sessions with a core group of community engagement advocates and practitioners, and an annual retreat that resulted in goal setting and implementation steps.
